This is the entry point for anyone new to the world of coaching. Whether you are young or old, if you have limited knowledge of coaching or want to provide more support to your club or fishery, then this is the course for you. You must however hold a basic level of angling knowledge and skill.
Developed by the Angling Trust in association with Coachwise Ltd, the 1st4sport Level 1 Award for Angling Support Coaches is the first qualification on the angling coaching ladder. The qualification is designed to provide learners aged 16 and over with an introduction to the practical and theoretical aspects of coaching angling. The foundation level of knowledge recognised in this qualification will enable them to develop an understanding of the safe, ethical and effective coaching of angling. Those who complete this Award will be able to assist more qualified angling coaches to deliver angling coaching sessions to adults and children.
The new Angling Support Coach qualification is focused on applied coaching practice, so that Learners will start practical delivery within half an hour on Day 1, and that will continue through to the assessment.
The course is pitched at those who have angling experience but may lack the confidence and broader experience to deliver a supported session. It would be appropriate for example for supportive parents who want to become more involved in angling, as well as those existing anglers who want to take their first step on the coaching ladder.
You don't need to be an individual member of the Angling Trust in order to undertake a coaching qualification — in fact if you take up coach licensing after qualifying you'll get your individual membership included.
- Saturday 25th January 2020
- Sunday 26th January 2020
Please note that this event has been rescheduled from December 2019
Closing date for applications Friday 13th December 2019, 4:30 pm
Learners should be prepared to attend between 9:30 am and 5 pm on each day.
The course breaks down coaching delivery into three areas:
- ACTIVATE, including interpretation of the working relationship of lead and support coaches; planning for he needs of the individual angler; dynamic risk assessment and keeping it safe
- DELIVER, including giving instructions; demonstrating; using open questions; building rapport; making it fun and keeping it safe; using praise appropriately
- REVIEW, including safeguarding responsibilities; closing the session; reviewing the learning that’s taken place; setting the topic for the next lesson; feedback to the Lead Level 2 Coach on individual learning; self-review and personal goal-setting
How soon will I be qualified?
You have to attend both the course dates in the set order and complete all the work to the required standard. Your work must be assessed and internally verified before the Approved Centre can apply to 1st4sport for a certificate in your name.
Once your certificate is issued to the Approved Centre, we will forward it to you as quickly as possible along with your completed coursework and an application pack for coach licensing. By taking your Level 1 qualification through the Angling Trust’s Coaching Centre you’re eligible to take up the first year of licensing free of charge.
Progressing to Level 2
If you are aiming to go on and undertake your Level 2 qualification as soon as possible, please be aware that it's necessary to have confirmation of Level 1 certification before you can be registered as a Learner on a Level 2 course. With the launch of the new L1AACA qualification this is now available much sooner than before, and it should be possible to tell you before you leave the course whether you can be certified. However you'll still need to meet the stated booking deadline for your preferred Level 2 event.
Although it is possible to book your Level 2 course before completing Level 1, you should be aware that if for any reason you couldn't complete Level 1 as planned (for example if you were ill or if your Level 1 event had to be postponed for bad weather) it could affect your timescales for undertaking and achieving a Level 2 qualification.
Availability of other events
As soon as we have new public events ready to advertise and open for booking, we'll add them to this site. If you don't see an event for which the dates and location would be suitable for you, it doesn't mean we don't run them in your area, just that currently there isn't a course available there.
Coaching Centre staff won't generally be able to tell you in advance what other events may be added later on, but you might like to be added to our Enquiry List. If so, please email firstname.lastname@example.org with your name and location.
